Govt Assures Thilamale' Bridge Quality as Project Reaches 72 Percent Completion

Construction Minister Dr Abdulla Muththalib has declared unwavering confidence in the quality of the Thilamale' Bridge, a monumental infrastructure project designed to connect Male' with Villimale', Gulhi Falhu, and Thilafushi.

Speaking to reporters following a comprehensive site visit, the Minister emphasised that the government, in close collaboration with the Indian government and construction firm Afcons, is working tirelessly to deliver this landmark project within the stipulated timeline.

"We are now working to complete the work by 2027 at the latest," he said, underscoring the administration's dedication to fulfilling its infrastructure commitments despite the project's formidable scale and complexity.

The Minister's visit to the bridge site served multiple purposes, including assessing progress firsthand and addressing concerns that have circulated on social media platforms regarding the structural integrity and design of the bridge. Some critics have raised questions about alleged bends or dips in the bridge's structure, prompting public speculation about potential quality issues.

Minister. Muththalib moved decisively to clarify these misconceptions, providing detailed technical explanations that contextualise the bridge's unique engineering requirements.

"This is not just a drawing of a bridge, this is a designed, engineered project. That means it doesn't have to be visible from afar. There is no dip like that. This is a Lego-like structure that connects individual parts,” he explained.

The reassurance regarding project quality carries significant weight given the Thilamale' Bridge's status as the largest infrastructure development undertaking in the capital city.

"So, this is not a quality issue. We see it from a distance, it's an illusion. The work is not going on with the so-called bends on the bridge."

He expressed optimism that once completed, the bridge would represent nothing less than an engineering marvel, describing the endeavor as "such a hard, massive project" that demands patience and precision. The Minister's confident assertions reflect both technical knowledge of the project's specifications and political commitment to transparency with the Maldivian public.

Progress on the Thilamale' Bridge has reached an impressive milestone, with 72 percent of the total construction work now complete. This substantial advancement, achieved despite various challenges encountered during execution, has reinforced optimism among officials that the majority of the bridge will be finished by next year.

Minister Muththalib attributed much of this progress to the fruitful cooperation between the Government of Maldives and the Government of India, which has played a pivotal role in resolving difficulties faced by the contractor.

"Most of the work has now been completed with the cooperation of the Government of India to resolve some of the difficulties faced by the contractor," he acknowledged, highlighting the international partnership that underpins this ambitious undertaking.

The Thilamale' Bridge represents the most significant infrastructural investment in the capital region, with a total project cost of USD 500 million, equivalent to around MVR 7.7 billion. The financial architecture of this mega-project reflects deep diplomatic and economic ties between Maldives and India, with USD 400 million provided through a line of credit from the Export-Import Bank of India and an additional USD 100 million in grant aid from the Indian government.

The project's delayed timeline, while a source of frustration for some citizens, has been attributed squarely to the sheer magnitude and technical complexity of the construction requirements. Building a multi-island bridge system in oceanic conditions presents engineering challenges that cannot be rushed without compromising safety and longevity. The Thilamale' Bridge stands as a symbol of national ambition and international cooperation, poised to transform urban connectivity in the capital region upon its projected completion.
