Maldives President Visits Tragic Diving Incident Site, Pledges Full Govt Support for Search Operations

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the site of the tragic diving incident in Vaavu Atoll, where a group of Italian nationals went missing during a diving expedition.

The President's visit marked a personal commitment to overseeing the ongoing search and rescue operations aimed at locating the missing individuals, demonstrating the highest level of governmental attention to this developing situation.

During his time at the site, President Dr Muizzu received a comprehensive briefing from the relevant authorities who have been stationed continuously at the location since the incident unfolded.

The MNDF Coast Guard's dive team and multiple supporting agencies provided the President with detailed updates on the technical challenges, search patterns, and progress achieved thus far in the massive recovery effort. The Chief Executive engaged directly with the personnel leading the operation, expressing appreciation for their dedication and sacrifice in these demanding circumstances.

In remarks delivered at the site, President Dr Muizzu offered his administration’s unwavering cooperation to all teams involved in the rescue mission.

"The Government stands ready to provide all necessary resources and arrangements to support these critical efforts," the President said, emphasising that every available option would be explored to bring the operation to a successful conclusion.

The President extended his best wishes to the divers, coast guard personnel, and civilian search teams working tirelessly under challenging conditions, acknowledging the physical and emotional demands such prolonged operations place upon those involved.

The presidential delegation included several key cabinet ministers who traveled alongside the President to demonstrate the government's coordinated response to the crisis. Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan, Minister of Foreign Affairs Iruthisham Adam; Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen; and Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef accompanied President Dr Muizzu during the visit.

The incident occurred during a diving excursion in Vaavu Atoll, a site known for its vibrant marine ecosystems and popular among visitors seeking to explore the Maldives' renowned underwater environments. The group involved five Italian nationals who were participating in what was supposed to be a routine recreational activity. Authorities have confirmed that one person succumbed to the circumstances, while search operations continue for the four individuals who remain unaccounted for in the waters surrounding the atoll.

In the wake of this tragedy, President Muizzu extended formal condolences to Sergio Mattarella, President of Italy, expressing solidarity with the people of Italy during this period of profound grief.

"We share in your sorrow and stand with you in this difficult moment," the President communicated, recognising the deep impact this incident has had on the affected families and the broader Italian community.

The Maldivian government has pledged to maintain open lines of communication with Italian diplomatic representatives and to provide all assistance possible to the families who have traveled to the Maldives seeking news of their loved ones.

Search and rescue operations remain ongoing as teams continue to canvas the designated search zones, employing specialised equipment and diving resources to locate the missing individuals.

Security forces were scouring remote seas around a deep cave where the divers were reported missing on Thursday afternoon.
