Maldives Solidifies Global Appeal as 2025 Visitor Survey Reveals Surge in First-Time Arrivals

The Maldives continues to cement its status as a premier global travel destination, with new data revealing that nearly three-quarters of all tourists visiting the archipelago are first-time visitors.

According to the Maldives Visitor Survey 2025, released this week by the Ministry of Tourism, 73 percent of arrivals were new to the islands, while 25 percent represented a loyal base of repeat travelers.

The comprehensive report, which analyzes tourist perceptions and travel habits, highlights an overwhelming sense of satisfaction among international guests. When asked to describe their Maldivian holiday in a single word, the most frequent response was beautiful. Other common descriptors included amazing, comfortable, peaceful, and like paradise, reflecting a high level of traveler confidence in the nation’s iconic white sandy beaches, crystal-clear lagoons, and world-class hospitality.

The survey underscores the Maldives’ reputation as a sanctuary for couples. Around 65 percent of all tourists are accompanied by a partner. This trend is particularly dominant among European and North American markets—the survey found that 77 percent of UK tourists, 75 percent of those from the United States, and 74 percent of German visitors traveled with a partner. Similarly, 71 percent of tourists from both Switzerland and India arrived as couples.

While the majority of travelers (73 percent) who visit with partners choose the privacy of luxury resorts, the report also noted a shift in accommodation trends. Local guest houses are seeing a surge in popularity, particularly among those seeking an island lifestyle and authentic interaction with local communities. Around 44 percent of guest house visitors are couples, while 19 percent are solo travelers and 12 percent travel in small groups of friends.

Despite the high influx of new visitors, the Maldives maintains a strong repeater market. One in four tourists return to the island nation, with the survey revealing impressive loyalty—57 percent of repeat visitors have visited between two and five times, while a dedicated 48 percent have visited more than 10 times.

The primary motivations for travel remain consistent—relaxation, honeymoons, and the allure of the natural environment. Beyond the scenery, the report indicates that tourists are very satisfied with the Maldives' standards of safety, cleanliness, and accommodation.

The Ministry of Tourism noted that the survey is a vital tool for the industry, providing policymakers and tourism officials with data-driven insights to expand services and refine marketing strategies. With 12 percent of visitors arriving as families and 13 percent with friends, there is a growing opportunity to diversify the Maldives' tourism product beyond the traditional honeymoon market.

Ultimately, the report concludes that the Maldives remains a highly recommended destination, with the vast majority of visitors stating they would encourage family and friends to visit.
