VIA Expands International Check-in Capacity Ahead of Peak Tourism Season

Velana International Airport (VIA) is set to scale up its operations with the launch of international check-in services at Terminal 2, starting October 25.

The strategic shift will see ten major airlines relocate their departure check-in operations to the newly refurbished terminal, a move spearheaded by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) to optimise capacity as the nation gears up for its bustling peak tourism season.

Under the new arrangement, passengers flying with Neos, Aeroflot, US-Bangla Airlines, Centrum Air, Azur Air, S7 Airlines, Shirak Avia, Kuwait Airways, Gulliv Air, and French Bee will complete their pre-flight formalities directly at Terminal 2. This transition effectively brings both of VIA’s passenger terminals into active use for international travelers, alleviating congestion during the industry's most lucrative months.

The expansion is strategically timed to accommodate the influx of visitors from major European markets, whose travel demand traditionally surges at this time of year. With the year-end holiday season and the subsequent first quarter generating vital revenue for the Maldives' resort and aviation sectors, the expanded infrastructure underscores a robust outlook for seasonal passenger traffic.

Terminal 2—formerly the airport's primary international hub—reopened in February following an extensive modernisation project that initially transitioned it to domestic operations. The upgraded facility now boasts 27 check-in counters, modern baggage handling belts, a variety of food and beverage outlets, dedicated prayer rooms, and a children’s play area. By integrating these upgraded amenities back into the international network, VIA aims to ensure a smoother, more efficient transit experience.

MACL has strongly advised all passengers traveling with the ten designated carriers to double-check their itineraries and report directly to Terminal 2, allowing ample time to navigate the updated departure procedures.
