In a ceremony held at Velana International Airport on Saturday, the Maldives marked the arrival of its one‑millionth tourist of the year.
The milestone visitor is Almudena Ortúño Esparza, a Spanish citizen, who arrived with her husband for their first ever trip to the island nation. The couple checked into the Pearl Seaview Guest House on the island of Fulidhoo, where they will spend their holiday.
The one‑millionth arrival comes just six months into 2026, matching the point at which the country recorded one million visitors in early June of last year. The rapid pace of arrivals underscores the Maldives’ continued appeal despite a global aviation landscape that has grown more costly and competitive.
Speaking at the event, Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen highlighted the significance of the achievement and outlined the government’s ambitious targets.
“Tourism is expected to hit this year’s target by the third quarter,” he said, pointing out that the administration is aiming to attract 2.5 million tourists in 2026.
“The whole industry has worked together. We are working hard to bring in more airlines,” he added, noting that expanding air connectivity is a cornerstone of the national strategy.
Minister Ameen acknowledged that the sector faces headwinds, chief among them the rise in ticket prices driven by higher oil costs.
“The challenge at the moment is that ticket prices have also risen due to the increase in oil prices,” he explained.
In addition, the ongoing conflict in the Middle East has dampened travel demand from key European markets, prompting authorities to launch offsetting measures – ranging from promotional campaigns to incentives for new airline routes – to mitigate the impact on Maldives tourism.
According to the latest data, the total number of tourists who have visited the Maldives so far this year has surpassed the one‑million mark, although that figure is roughly five percent lower than the same period in 2025. The month of June alone saw arrivals fall 17 percent compared with June 2025, underscoring the pressure on the industry.
Despite the dip, officials remain optimistic that the combination of new airline partnerships, targeted marketing, and the allure of the Maldives’ pristine beaches and luxury resorts will keep the destination on track to meet its annual goal.
The ceremony concluded with a brief reception for Mrs Ortúño Esparza and her husband, celebrating both their maiden visit and the archipelago’s continued resilience in the face of global travel challenges.
