President Muizzu Secures PNC Ticket for 2028 Presidential Election as Ruling Party Launches Campaign

The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has officially presented incumbent President Dr Mohamed Muizzu with the party's ticket to contest for a second term in the 2028 presidential election.

The presentation took place at a special ceremony held at the Social Center in Male', marking the conclusion of the PNC congress and the formal launch of the President's re-election campaign.

The endorsement of President Muizzu’s candidacy was finalised through a resolution passed during a special session of the PNC congress. Submitted by Abdulla Ibrahim, the special delegate representing the Fuvahmulah South constituency, the resolution received unanimous backing from all 1,119 delegates participating in the session. The newly elected members of the PNC leadership also ratified the decision with a unanimous vote.

Under Article 88 (e) of the PNC constitution, an incumbent party member serving as President who bids for a second term is automatically awarded the presidential ticket without the requirement of a primary election.

PNC Chairperson and Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, presented the ticket to President Muizzu. The resolution emphasising the decision noted that a second term is crucial to ensure the uninterrupted continuation of the President's developmental programmes and public services, stating that both the party membership and the general public share the belief that he deserves another term.

Addressing the audience at the closing ceremony, Abdul Raheem declared that the conclusion of the congress marks a strategic milestone—the official beginning of the 2028 presidential election campaign.

We say that we will not tire. We will not be swayed from this resolve. Our hearts hold honesty and sincerity. With fast, proactive ideas, we will serve this nation,” he said.

The Parliament Speaker emphasised that the PNC embodies a commitment to national interest, urging party leaders and members to remain humble and accessible to the public. He maintained that successful governance requires staying grounded and closely connected to the citizens, an approach he credited President Muizzu with practicing.

We stand firmly behind the President on that principle. This cannot be done with pride or arrogance at all, Abdul Raheem added.

Calling on the newly mobilised party apparatus to initiate immediate grassroots efforts across the Maldives, Abdul Raheem asserted that victory in 2028 requires sustained dedication from every member.

The members of the Congress Party stand with President Muizzu without a second thought or doubt, he concluded.

The national spirit today rests with President Muizzu. Our resolve will not wane. We will not tire.
