Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Malaysia will extend a USD 100 million financing facility to the Maldives at the request of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA), during a joint press briefing held at the President’s Office in Male’.
The facility, to be arranged through Malaysia’s central bank, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), is slated for swift completion, though the exact terms of the loan remain undisclosed.
The announcement came alongside President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who highlighted a suite of pending Maldivian requests during his official visit. Among them, PM Anwar addressed the long‑standing visa bottleneck that prevents guardians of Maldivian students in Malaysia from securing long‑term stay permits. Describing the obstacle as “purely bureaucratic,” the Prime Minister said the matter will be tabled at the next Malaysian Cabinet meeting, emphasising that “we have no objection to Maldivians living, working or studying in Malaysia.”
Health‑care access for Maldivian patients seeking treatment in Malaysian hospitals was also raised. PM Anwar assured that appropriate inter‑ministerial channels would be activated to remove procedural hurdles, echoing his broader commitment to ease people‑to‑people mobility between the two nations.
In parallel, the leaders exchanged three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) that cement cooperation in defence, Islamic affairs, and trade‑investment. The defence MoU, signed by the Maldives Ministry of Defence and Malaysia’s Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry, sets a framework for joint training, capacity‑building and information sharing. The Islamic affairs MoU, also between the respective ministries, aims to promote collaboration on religious education, scholarship programmes and cultural exchanges.
The visit also marked the initiation of preliminary talks on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), with both sides agreeing in principle to commence negotiations aimed at reducing tariffs and boosting bilateral trade, particularly in tourism, fisheries and renewable energy.
Beyond economic matters, PM Anwar and President Muizzu reaffirmed shared diplomatic priorities, notably continued support for the Palestinian cause and coordinated action within the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.
Malaysia and the Maldives celebrate 58 years of diplomatic relations, characterized by regular high‑level exchanges, robust people‑to‑people links, and joint development projects. The current state visit, described by both leaders as a “milestone in our friendship,” is expected to deepen that partnership across multiple sectors and lay the groundwork for a more integrated regional future.
