Maldivian Unveils State‑of‑the‑Art Seaplane Terminal at Velana International Airport

Maldivian, the national carrier, has officially inaugurated its newly upgraded seaplane terminal at Velana International Airport, marking a significant step forward in the archipelago’s tourism infrastructure.

Designed to double the facility’s handling capacity, the terminal now accommodates up to 90 passengers indoors and 40 passengers in a purpose‑built outdoor lounge that mirrors the Maldives’ turquoise waters and coral‑rich underwater landscapes. The modernised complex features expanded boarding gates, a dedicated staff canteen, a children’s play zone, and souvenir kiosks offering locally crafted items and light refreshments.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Island Aviation, highlighted the “comprehensive transformation” undertaken since the project’s launch last year, noting that the revamped interior and exterior enhance the overall visitor experience and represent a key milestone in the expansion of its seaplane network.

Iyas also announced that Maldivian has placed an order for two brand-new Twin Otter Classic aircraft, slated to join the existing fleet of 11 Twin Otters and enter service in 2027, further bolstering the airline’s capacity to serve resort islands.

Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen lauded the development as evidence of the airline’s improving financial health, citing a three‑year shift to a more sustainable operational model that has increased assets and accelerated infrastructure projects. He added that construction is already underway on a new corporate office building that will embody Maldivian’s prestige and support its growing international profile.

The revamped terminal builds on Maldivian’s history—first launching seaplane operations in April 2014 and opening its inaugural terminal in 2015—and signals the carrier’s commitment to delivering premium, culturally resonant services to the millions of tourists who rely on seaplane transfers to explore the Maldives’ world‑renowned atolls.
