Maldives Looks to Capitalise on Strategic Advantage with Modern Yacht Marina in North
In a significant step toward boosting maritime tourism and local economic development, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has awarded a contract to develop a state-of-the-art yacht marina in Uligan, Haa Alifu Atoll.
The project, aimed at transforming Uligan into a premier destination for international yachting, has been contracted to SASe Construction, a reputable private construction firm.
The signing ceremony took place at MPL’s head office, where MPL Deputy Chief Executive Officer Ali Hashim officially inked the agreement on behalf of the state-owned enterprise, while Abdulla Sawad, Managing Director of SASe Construction, signed for the contractor.
Though the financial value of the contract remains undisclosed, the project is being hailed as a strategic investment in the nation’s blue economy.
The first phase of development will establish a fully functional marina capable of accommodating up to 18 yachts simultaneously. Designed to meet international standards, the facility will offer essential services including mooring, fueling, waste disposal, and provisioning, alongside dedicated immigration and customs clearance points to streamline entry procedures for foreign visitors.
Given Uligan’s existing role as a frequent port of call for international yachts navigating through the northern atolls, the new infrastructure is expected to significantly enhance the guest experience while reinforcing the Maldives’ reputation as a luxury yachting destination.
MPL will oversee the operation of the marina upon completion and is already exploring options for future expansion, with plans to invite additional tenders for further development.
The government views this project as a catalyst for special economic activity in Uligan, aiming to stimulate local employment, support small businesses, and generate sustainable revenue through high-end tourism.
