MPL Launches Maldives National Logistics Service to Strengthen Domestic Supply Chain

In a significant move to enhance the country’s supply chain infrastructure, Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) officially launched the Maldives National Logistics service, aimed at streamlining the transportation of essential goods across the archipelago.

Minister of Finance and Planning, Moosa Zameer inaugurated the service at this year’s Marine Expo, marking a pivotal step in addressing long-standing logistical challenges in the island nation.

The newly launched service is designed to facilitate the efficient movement of basic commodities, staples, and imported goods to regional warehouses via a unified network. MPL emphasised that the initiative seeks to eliminate bottlenecks in cargo distribution while bolstering cold chain capabilities and scheduled deliveries.

“Maldives National Logistics is a comprehensive system that integrates import-export processes, transportation, warehousing, and nationwide distribution under a single framework,” MPL said in a statement.

“This will provide a permanent solution to the difficulties faced in goods transportation, benefiting both businesses and the public.”

The government awarded MPL the mandate in December last year to sustainably manage the ANCHOR logistics network, prompting the company to expand operations and establish Maldives National Logistics as a dedicated service.

Future plans include extending domestic transport solutions, with MPL vessels set to transship containers directly to key regional ports in Kulhudhuffushi and Hithadhoo, Addu City.

MPL’s Chief Logistics Officer, Ahmed Nazim highlighted that the service will leverage scheduled ferry routes to ensure timely deliveries.

“MPL will independently manage last-mile distribution, guaranteeing goods reach the nearest island ports on predetermined dates,” Nazim said. The initiative is expected to reduce traders’ operational costs while accelerating market access for essential goods.

To further scale operations, MPL is commissioning a new landing craft, slated for deployment within eight months. Additionally, the company is developing commercial warehouses in the industrial island, Thilafushi to secure cleared cargo.

With these measures, Maldives National Logistics aims to transform the country’s supply chain dynamics, fostering economic resilience and regional trade growth.
