Not Just Another Island: Vahmaafushi Island and the Next Phase of Maafushi’s Tourism Story
Just minutes by boat from Maafushi, Vahmaafushi Island has officially opened to visitors, adding a new layer to one of the Maldives’ most established guesthouse destinations. Developed as a local picnic island, a format long familiar to domestic travellers and increasingly used by guesthouse operators for structured day trips, the island’s importance lies not only in what it offers on its own but in how it extends Maafushi’s wider tourism experience.
Maafushi’s success as a guesthouse hub has been built on accessibility, affordability, and volume. As the destination has matured, competitiveness has depended less on room rates alone and more on the depth of experiences available beyond the island itself. Day trips and nearby attractions now play a central role in shaping visitor choice, length of stay, and overall spend. In this context, the opening of Vahmaafushi functions as a product extension to Maafushi’s tourism economy rather than a standalone attraction.

At the centre of Vahmaafushi’s appeal is the Maldives’ first island-to-island zipline. Spanning the island’s distinctive Y-shaped formation, the attraction introduces an element of adventure to the picnic island model, which has traditionally been associated with passive leisure. The aerial route offers wide views across shallow lagoons and reef flats, providing a clear point of differentiation from conventional beach-only outings while remaining suitable for a mixed visitor base.
Beyond the zipline, the island has been planned to support an easy, full-day visit. Open coastal stretches, shaded cabanas, and accessible swimming areas encourage a relaxed pace, while the island’s shape creates clear sightlines that appeal to photographers and casual visitors alike. Facilities are modern and functional, designed to support use without drawing attention away from the natural setting.
From a broader perspective, Vahmaafushi reflects an incremental shift in how local tourism infrastructure is being developed in the Maldives. Rather than replicating a resort experience, it offers a curated yet accessible day-trip option that complements nearby guesthouse accommodation and is within practical reach of both Maafushi and the Greater Malé region. Phase One of the project is now complete and operational, with sustainability considerations integrated into site planning and daily operations.

The economic effects extend into the surrounding community. Vahmaafushi is expected to generate between 70 and 80 full-time jobs and to strengthen the tourism ecosystem of Maafushi, which is home to more than 30 guesthouses. Additional opportunities for local suppliers, guides, and service providers further reinforce the island’s role within a broader, interconnected tourism economy.
Developed by MHR Trading Private Limited in collaboration with K. Maafushi Local Authority Company Limited, Vahmaafushi Island illustrates how targeted, experience-led developments can add depth to established guesthouse destinations. For travellers, it offers variety and a change of pace within easy reach of Maafushi. For the destination itself, it represents a measured step in sustaining competitiveness as local tourism continues to evolve.
