President Muizzu Engages German Investors at Berlin Business Roundtable

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu addressed the Maldives-Germany Business Roundtable in Berlin, calling for increased German investment and outlining the government’s economic and development priorities.

The President was received by Dr Volker Treier of the German Chambers of Industry and Commerce and Günther Mull of DERMALOG. During the session, he presented the framework of the Maldives’ Vision 2040, describing it as a national development strategy focused on economic resilience, institutional reform, and environmental sustainability.

President Muizzu stated that the country’s official reserves have reached what he described as a historic high and said efforts to improve foreign exchange circulation and maintain fiscal discipline remain central to government policy. He also referred to progress in reducing the budget deficit.

“With these positive developments, investor confidence has risen substantially,” the President said. He cited investment by international technology firms, including Google, in digital infrastructure and highlighted reforms in financial systems and public service digitalisation as priorities under the national vision.

The President also addressed climate and energy policy, identifying the transition to renewable energy as a key area for partnership. He referred to initiatives such as “Project Solar City,” which he said aim to develop resilient and affordable energy systems suited to island nations.

Speaking on bilateral ties, President Muizzu acknowledged the role of German investors and tour operators in the development of the Maldivian tourism sector. He invited German businesses to participate in the planned “Visit Maldives Year” in 2027 and to explore new investment opportunities, including the sustainable township project “Project Ayla.”

The roundtable included presentations from Invest Maldives and the Ministry of Tourism and Environment. A Memorandum of Understanding on destination promotion and marketing was signed between Visit Maldives and DERTOUR Deutschland GmbH.

The business forum forms part of President Muizzu’s official visit to Germany. The visit also included talks with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at Schloss Bellevue. According to the President’s Office, the visit coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Maldives and Germany.
