Velana International Airport Domestic Operations Shift to Upgraded Terminal 2

In a significant step to modernise aviation infrastructure, domestic flight operations at Velana International Airport (VIA) have been officially relocated to the revamped Terminal 2, formerly the international terminal.

The move, aimed at reducing congestion and improving passenger experience, was inaugurated by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef in a ceremony held at the newly upgraded facility.

The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) confirmed that the transition follows extensive renovations to Terminal 2, which now boasts 27 check-in counters—a substantial increase from the previous domestic terminal’s eight counters. Other key upgrades include three security clearance machines, six departure gates, two expansive baggage belts (four times larger than before), and enhanced amenities such as gender-segregated prayer rooms, a children’s play area, and three food and beverage outlets.

"The main objective of this change is to reduce congestion at the former domestic airport and provide the best possible service to passengers," MACL said. The relocation is expected to streamline operations and cater to the growing demand for domestic air travel, a crucial segment for inter-island connectivity in the Maldives.

Traffic Flow Adjustments

With the shift, major changes to passenger and vehicle traffic have taken effect. Domestic arrivals will now access taxis via a new queue system at Terminal 2, eliminating the previous requirement to walk to the port-side taxi stand. The adjustment is part of broader efforts to optimize airport logistics following last year’s opening of Terminal 1, VIA’s new international hub, which welcomed all foreign airlines by December.

Vice President Hails Milestone in Aviation Development

Addressing attendees at the inauguration, Vice President Latheef praised the swift completion of the project, calling it a "significant enhancement in service delivery" that aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s infrastructure-focused economic vision. He emphasised that the outdated domestic terminal had long hindered efficiency and economic potential.

"The improved facility will deliver tangible benefits for both Maldivian citizens and the national economy," he said, crediting MACL’s workforce for their rapid execution.

The Vice President added that the upgrade reflects the administration’s commitment to resolving critical infrastructure challenges with "timely and comprehensive solutions."

A Strategic Boost for Domestic Travel

The relocation underscores the Maldives’ push to enhance its domestic aviation network, vital for tourism and local mobility. With expanded capacity and modern amenities, Terminal 2 is poised to better serve residents and tourists traveling between islands, reinforcing VIA’s role as a regional aviation hub.
