President Dr Mohamed Muizzu delivered a comprehensive press statement from the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, marking the culmination of a State Visit that both leaders have hailed as the dawn of a “renewed and forward-looking partnership” between the two Indian Ocean neighbours.
Expressing profound gratitude to President Anura Kumara Disanayaka and the people of Sri Lanka for their warm hospitality, President Muizzu emphasised that the visit transcended a mere reaffirmation of close ties.
“This visit marks not only a reaffirmation of our close neighbourly ties, but also the beginning of a renewed and forward-looking partnership between the Maldives and Sri Lanka,” he said.
The centerpiece of the visit was a series of “highly productive discussions” that yielded several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) spanning higher education, health, defence, tourism, and youth development. While hailing the signing of these agreements, President Muizzu struck a pragmatic tone, asserting that the immediate focus must shift to implementation.
“Our focus now is clear—delivery and implementation, ensuring that these agreements translate into tangible benefits for our people,” he affirmed.
Economic cooperation was identified as a central pillar of the strengthened relationship. President Muizzu outlined a vision for expanded trade and investment flows, including exploring the establishment of a Bank of Maldives (BML) presence in Sri Lanka and introducing premium Maldivian fisheries products to the local market. He underscored the need to address the current trade imbalance to ensure a “balanced, equitable, and mutually beneficial” economic relationship. The upcoming Maldives–Sri Lanka Business Forum was highlighted as a key platform to connect investors and unlock new business opportunities.
Beyond economics, the leaders pledged deeper collaboration in education and youth empowerment, aiming to equip young people for a rapidly changing world through vocational training and institutional partnerships. Recognising their shared identity as island nations, President Muizzu reaffirmed commitments to sustainable fisheries management, marine protection, and maritime security cooperation, thanking Sri Lanka for its continued support in defence training and joint exercises.
The existential threat of climate change also dominated the global agenda. The President called for stronger international advocacy and collective action for climate resilience, noting the survival of both nations is intrinsically linked to the health of the Indian Ocean.
Concluding his statement, President Muizzu described the visit as a pivotal moment that heralds a “new and dynamic chapter” in bilateral relations. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ steadfast commitment to deepening the partnership, advancing regional cooperation, and promoting peace and shared prosperity across the Indian Ocean region.
