Maldives Announces Annual Allocation from Green Fund to Strengthen Environmental Protection Efforts

In a significant move to bolster environmental conservation across the archipelago, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that MVR 7 million will be allocated annually from the Maldives Green Fund to support environmental protection and conservation initiatives.

The announcement was made during the President's address marking World Environment Day, observed globally on 5 June.

In his message, President Muizzu extended warm greetings to all Maldivians, emphasising that the day serves as a vital reminder to remain mindful of the environment and to renew collective efforts to protect it for future generations.

The President underscored that while the Maldives faces unique environmental challenges as a low-lying island nation, safeguarding the natural heritage of the country remains a paramount priority for his administration.

Addressing one of the most pressing issues in climate action, President Dr Muizzu highlighted that the lack of adequate financial resources has been one of the greatest obstacles in addressing climate change effectively.

He noted that the annual MVR 7 million allocation from the Green Fund will be provided in addition to the budget already allocated to the environment sector, further reinforcing the government's commitment to environmental protection.

The funding will support a comprehensive range of initiatives, including the management of protected areas and their wildlife, conservation programmes, environmental research, public awareness campaigns, technical capacity-building efforts, and environmental projects undertaken by civil society organisations and schools.

The President expressed confidence that the allocation would strengthen environmental protection efforts and facilitate the development and implementation of long-term projects that will benefit the nation for years to come.

This year's World Environment Day theme, "A Global Call for Climate Action," is particularly relevant to Small Island Developing States such as the Maldives, which remain on the frontlines of climate change impacts.

President Muizzu called upon all stakeholders to unite in these efforts to ensure a sustainable future for the Maldives.
