Maldives Issues Strong Condemnation of Middle East Escalation, Calls for Immediate Ceasefire

The Maldives has issued a forceful condemnation of the recent military actions in the Middle East, denouncing attacks by Iran against Gulf nations and expressing deep alarm over the escalating cycle of violence initiated by Israel and the United States against Iranian targets.

In an official statement released Tuesday, the Maldivian government strongly condemned the attacks by Iran directed at Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and other regional partners.

The statement highlighted particular concern over incidents impacting civilian locations, including airports and oil facilities in the Gulf region, labeling such actions “a clear violation of international law and the Geneva Conventions.” The Maldives further expressed regret that these attacks on the Gulf countries are being perpetuated by Iran “even without any retaliation by these countries.”

Shifting focus to the broader context of the crisis, the Maldivian government articulated its deep concern over the escalating situation in the Middle East following the military attacks initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran. These strikes were also strongly condemned, with specific mention of an attack on a girls’ school that reportedly resulted in over a hundred civilian casualties, as well as assaults on hospitals and oil facilities that caused widespread damage.

The statement noted with “grave alarm” that these actions have further heightened tensions in the Gulf region, warning that the continued violence fundamentally undermines any prospects for peace. Consequently, the Maldives has called for an immediate ceasefire by all parties to prevent further loss of life and civilian suffering.

Maldives also urged the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating the conflict and bringing lasting peace, stability, and security to the region. The Indian Ocean nation joined a growing international chorus advocating for restraint and a return to dialogue to resolve the deepening crisis.
