Maldives Presents Exquisite Hand-Woven Thun’du Kunaa to United Nations in Historic Gift

In a landmark moment symbolising cultural pride and diplomatic friendship, the Maldives has gifted a meticulously handcrafted Thun’du Kunaa—a traditional reed mat—to the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The presentation, made during a ceremonial unveiling today, marks the first time a Maldivian artifact has been officially displayed at the UN, underscoring the nation’s rich cultural heritage and its six decades of active participation in the global body.

The gift was commissioned by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu during his visit to UN Headquarters in 2024, commemorating the dual milestone of the 60th anniversary of Maldivian independence and the country’s 60 years of UN membership.

The Thun’du Kunaa, unveiled by Dr Ali Naseer Mohamed, the Permanent Representative of the Maldives to the United Nations, is a stunning example of centuries-old Maldivian craftsmanship. The mat was specially designed and handcrafted by a master artisan from the southern atoll island of Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll Gadhdhoo, a community long celebrated for preserving and perfecting this delicate weaving tradition.

More than an artistic treasure, the Thun’du Kunaa embodies the resilience, craftsmanship, and cultural identity of the Maldivian people. Its presence at the UN serves as a quiet yet powerful testament to the nation’s commitment to preserving tradition while engaging with the global community.
