Maldives Vows Full Probe After Deadly Fire Claims Lives of Five Bangladesh Migrant Workers

In the wake of a devastating fire that killed five Bangladeshi expatriate workers, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged a comprehensive investigation into the safety standards of migrant worker accommodations, vowing to "take every necessary step" to prevent a repeat of the tragedy.

The blaze erupted in the early hours of 13 March, at an expat accommodation block on the island of Dhigurah, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. Initial reports from local residents indicate the fire started due to a gas leak while two individuals were cooking, quickly engulfing the building while most of the occupants were asleep. It is reported that around 30 foreign workers resided in the facility.

The inferno resulted in a catastrophic loss of life. Official figures confirm that five Bangladeshi nationals were killed. Two other workers sustained severe injuries and were medically evacuated to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in the capital, Male’. 

A media official from IGMH provided a grave update on the condition of the two survivors, stating they remain on ventilators in critical condition. Both patients suffered significant burn injuries—24 percent and 17 percent respectively—and sustained severe lung damage from smoke inhalation.

The incident has prompted a significant diplomatic response from the highest levels of the government. President Muizzu formally extended his condolences in a letter addressed to Tarique Rahman, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.

In his correspondence, President Muizzu expressed his profound sadness and stated that the Government and people of the Maldives stand in solidarity with Bangladesh and the bereaved families during this difficult time. He specifically acknowledged the valuable role the Bangladeshi community plays in Maldivian society and emphasised that the nation shares in their grievous loss and sorrow.

Most critically, the President’s letter contained a promise of action. He confirmed that he has instructed the relevant authorities to closely investigate the matter. While preliminary accounts point to a gas leak as the cause, no official investigative report has yet been released. 

The promised investigation will likely seek to establish the definitive cause and identify any lapses in safety that contributed to the high casualty rate, aiming to implement stricter measures to protect the vast foreign workforce that is integral to the Maldivian economy.
