In a significant move aimed at fostering unity and stability, the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) National Assembly has unanimously approved the formation of a high-powered interim advisory committee to guide the party’s leadership.
The committee will be led by the party's two most prominent figures—former Presidents Mohamed Nasheed and Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
The resolution, moved by the MDP’s interim chairman, Abdul Ghafoor Moosa, was passed during a decisive one-hour meeting on Wednesday night. According to a member present, the session concluded without dissent signaling a collective desire to present a united front.
The newly formed six-member advisory body is a who’s who of the MDP’s senior leadership. It includes Interim Chairman Abdul Ghafoor, former Presidents Nasheed and Solih, current MDP President Abdulla Shahid, MDP’s Parliamentary Group leader Ibrahim Nazil, and former Chairman Fayyaz Ismail. This committee is tasked with advising Chairman Abdul Ghafoor on all matters relating to the running of the country's largest opposition party and will remain in place until a permanent chairman is elected.
In a parallel and equally historic decision, the National Assembly also moved to permanently formalise the roles of its former leaders. It approved an amendment to the party’s constitution that will grant both former President Nasheed and former President Solih permanent seats on the National Assembly. This constitutional change, which will be formally ratified at the party’s next congress, is designed to institutionalise the wisdom and experience of those who have led the nation from within the MDP.
Further solidifying this collaborative framework, former President Nasheed was officially appointed to the party’s advisory board, a body that, until now, had only included former President Solih.
The resolutions are widely seen as a direct effort to heal recent internal rifts. The party has been roiled by tension since a rally on Monday night, where former President Nasheed was reportedly not given an opportunity to speak. The incident led to the swift dismissal of two senior officials—Deputy Chairman (Administration) Ibrahim Waheed and Legal Director Ahmed Mauroof—and culminated in a motion signed by 55 members of the National Assembly seeking the removal of Interim Chairman Abdul Ghafoor.
By bringing all factions to the same table and granting its most influential figures permanent structural roles, the MDP is aiming to successfully navigate a potential crisis, choosing consolidation over conflict.
