Police Chief Naveen Requests for Sudden Retirement

In a sudden and unexpected move, Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has officially submitted a request for retirement, according to local media reports.

The development comes without a stated cause, leaving a vacuum of information and intense speculation regarding the motives behind his abrupt departure.

Commissioner Naveen, who assumed the role in June last year following the equally sudden retirement of his predecessor Ali Shujau, has yet to comment publicly on his decision. The Maldives Police Service has also maintained silence over the reports, refusing to provide any official clarification to the media.

Naveen's appointment itself was a stabilising measure, coming after Commissioner Shujau's exit amid heated public protests related to the contentious fall of a young woman from a building in capital Male’. He was appointed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, having previously served in an acting capacity since April.

The timing of his retirement is particularly conspicuous, as it coincides with the recommendation by a Parliamentary committee to suspend him along with over half a dozen other senior police officers. These suspensions are reportedly connected to serious allegations of corruption within the police welfare corporation, Polco, among other ongoing disciplinary matters.

The parliament has not yet reached a conclusive decision on the committee recommendation, deepening the mystery surrounding the Commissioner's choice to step down at this precise juncture.
