President Addresses Visa Concerns of Maldivians in Sri Lanka During Colombo Engagement

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Sajidha Mohamed met with members of the Maldivian community residing in Colombo, using the occasion of the President's State Visit to Sri Lanka to directly engage with citizens facing administrative challenges abroad.

The gathering represented the President's ongoing commitment to maintaining connections with Maldivians overseas, a pledge he has consistently honoured throughout his tenure by making community outreach a priority during international travels. Government Ministers and senior officials accompanied the President and First Lady at the event, underscoring the significance of the engagement for the Maldivian diaspora in Sri Lanka.

During his interactions with community members, President Dr Muizzu inquired about their well-being and listened to their views and concerns, demonstrating a personalised approach to addressing the challenges faced by Maldivians living beyond the nation's borders.

The President emphasised the longstanding friendship and close people-to-people ties that have historically connected the Maldives and Sri Lanka, noting that these bonds continue to form the foundation of productive cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

A central focus of his discussions with the Sri Lankan government involved documentation and visa-related matters affecting Maldivian nationals residing in Sri Lanka, for which the President expressed confidence that sustained diplomatic engagement would yield sustainable solutions in the near future.

Beyond addressing immediate visa concerns, the President highlighted several initiatives aimed at strengthening economic and social ties between the two nations.

He announced plans to establish a Bank of Maldives (BML) presence in Sri Lanka, a development that would significantly enhance financial services accessibility for Maldivians living abroad while facilitating easier remittance flows and banking operations.

Additionally, the President discussed measures to introduce Maldivian products to the Sri Lankan market, creating new opportunities for Maldivian businesses and strengthening economic integration between the nations.

Collaboration in education and healthcare sectors also featured prominently in discussions, with plans underway to expand institutional partnerships that would benefit citizens of both countries.

The President further noted that steps are being taken to enhance the range and quality of services provided at the Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka, ensuring that Maldivians abroad have adequate consular support.
