Maldives to Launch Major Tourism Push in India, China, and Russia Amid Arrival Slump

The government has announced an aggressive new strategy to revitalise its crucial tourism industry, targeting key markets in India, China, and Russia after a sharp decline in tourist arrivals attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim during a press conference at the President’s Office. Minister Thoriq revealed that despite record-breaking tourist numbers in the first two months of the year, this month has seen a significant downturn. The primary cause has been the widespread cancellation of flights by Middle Eastern airlines, a major channel for visitors to the island nation.

To counter this sudden drop, the government is pursuing a dual approach. Firstly, it is working closely with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation to incentivise the launch of new flight routes and increase the frequency of existing services.

“At the moment, the most focused areas are China, India and Russia. We are also working on not only adding more flights but also increasing the frequency where we have made significant progress,” Minister Thoriq explained.

He highlighted ongoing discussions with the Turkish government to bolster operations of Turkish Airlines, lauding it as one of the most efficient carriers serving the Maldives.

Secondly, a substantial marketing campaign is set to launch early next month, directly targeting potential travellers in India, China, and Russia. This initiative aims to assure travellers of the Maldives' accessibility and to recapture lost market share.

The Minister acknowledged the immediate impact on the hospitality sector, confirming that many resorts have experienced booking cancellations for this month and next. However, he offered a note of cautious optimism, stating that subsequent future bookings have not been significantly affected. He also noted that resorts are actively mitigating guest inconvenience by offering concessions and free re-booking options.

In response to the logistical chaos caused by flight disruptions, the government, according to the Minister, has provided assistance to around 1,680 tourists who were stranded in the Maldives since the conflict began, ensuring their safe and managed return home.
