Maldivian and SriLankan Airlines Forge Landmark Pact to Enhance Regional Travel

In a transformative move poised to significantly reshape travel and tourism in the Indian Ocean, the national carriers of the Maldives and Sri Lanka have announced a comprehensive strategic partnership.

The agreement between Maldivian and SriLankan Airlines, a member of the global Oneworld alliance, is designed to dramatically enhance worldwide connectivity to the Maldives while simultaneously offering Maldivian citizens unprecedented access to international destinations.

The core of the landmark deal focuses on a seamless integration of the two airlines' complementary networks. Maldivian will leverage its extensive domestic reach to accommodate passengers arriving in the Maldives on SriLankan Airlines' international services. This will allow tourists to smoothly transition from long-haul flights at Velana International Airport (MLE) in Male’ to 17 domestic destinations across the nation's picturesque atolls, providing a far more efficient and convenient journey directly to their final resort or local island.

Conversely, the partnership opens up a world of opportunity for Maldivian travelers. Passengers beginning their journey in the archipelago will now benefit from streamlined, hassle-free connections through SriLankan Airlines’ strategic hub at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo (CMB). This grants direct access to the airline’s vast global network, which includes numerous destinations within the influential Oneworld alliance, offering greater flexibility, more choice, and a premium travel experience.

“This partnership marks another important step in our efforts to enhance accessibility to the Maldives and strengthen connectivity beyond Male’ to the atolls,” Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian said.

“With SriLankan Airlines’ extensive global reach and our domestic network, this collaboration will support tourism growth while also making international travel more convenient for Maldivians.”

The alliance is strategically aligned with both airlines' commitment to fostering regional cooperation and driving economic growth through tourism. By creating a seamless, integrated travel experience, the partnership is expected to be a significant catalyst for the continued expansion of both tourism and business travel to the Maldives.
