Maldivian to Launch Historic Direct Flights to Australia, Connecting Paradise to the Outback
In a landmark move for tourism and connectivity, Maldivian Airlines is poised to launch its inaugural direct flight service to Australia next month.
The national carrier, operated by Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL), confirmed to local media that the brand-new route to Melbourne will commence on 17 May, marking the first-ever scheduled direct flights between the two countries by the airline.
The service will begin with a frequency of one round-trip flight per week. The outbound flight will depart from the Maldives on 17 May, with the return flight from Melbourne arriving back in the island nation on 19 May. IASL has indicated that the flight schedule is designed to be adaptable, with plans to increase the number of weekly flights in response to passenger demand.
This historic air link is the result of a bilateral air services agreement formally signed on 19 March. The signing ceremony saw Abdul Haris, Chairman of the Board of the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, and Jim Wolf, Assistant Secretary for International Aviation at Australia's Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, ink the deal on behalf of their respective governments.
The Maldivian government hailed the agreement as a critical step in strengthening the bilateral relationship and enhancing people-to-people links.
The new route is strategically timed to capitalise on a growing market. Official statistics reveal that 6,526 Australian tourists arrived in the Maldives in the first two months of this year alone, representing a 1.4 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
This direct service is expected to significantly boost these numbers, offering Australian travellers unparalleled convenience to access the Maldives' famed luxury resorts and pristine beaches, while also opening new avenues for Maldivians to visit Australia.
