Private Jet Boom Fuels Luxury Travel Surge in Maldives Amid Global Air Disruptions

The Maldives has witnessed an extraordinary spike in private aviation traffic, with 128 private jets landing between 28 February and 14 March—marking a staggering 166 percent increase compared to the 70 arrivals recorded during the same period last year.

This surge underscores a strategic shift among high-net-worth travelers who are increasingly bypassing congested commercial hubs in favour of direct, seamless access to the island nation’s exclusive resorts.

The spike comes amid widespread flight cancellations and delays at major Middle Eastern transit airports due to the ongoing military conflict in the region, prompting affluent travelers to prioritise reliability and privacy over conventional air travel.

Last year, the archipelago averaged five private jet arrivals per day during this window, with a peak of nine on the busiest day. This year, the daily average has more than doubled to over twelve, culminating in a record 18 private jets touching down at Velana International Airport and Maafaru International Airport on 3 March alone.

While Velana International Airport in Male’ remains the primary gateway for international visitors, Maafaru International Airport in the Noonu Atoll has emerged as the premier destination for private aviation. The facility recently handled more than 25 private jets parked simultaneously—a first in its operational history—during the peak of the 2024–2025 tourism season.

This leap in capacity is attributed to significant infrastructure upgrades completed in recent years, including expanded apron space and improved ground handling services, which have increased the airport’s annual handling capacity to around 800 aircraft movements. Prior to these enhancements, Maafaru was forced to turn away between 50 and 80 private jets each season due to space constraints. The transformation has cemented its status as a dedicated luxury aviation hub, catering to VIPs, celebrities, and elite families seeking discreet and effortless entry to remote overwater villas.

The growth trajectory is further confirmed by annual data. In 2025, Maafaru recorded 804 private jet movements, a 38 percent jump from the 579 flights logged in 2024. December alone saw 102 arrivals, averaging over three luxury jets per day, while the combined December–January peak accounted for more than 200 movements.

Industry insiders note that many of these travelers are booking back-to-back stays at private island resorts, often arriving via private jet and transferring by seaplane or speedboat to their destinations. The trend reflects the Maldives’ success in positioning itself as a resilient, high-end sanctuary amid global travel volatility.

The luxury travel ecosystem in the Maldives continues to expand, with over eight superyachts anchoring in Maldivian waters during the recent New Year holiday period, accompanied by dozens of private jet shuttles ferrying guests to exclusive atoll resorts. With geopolitical tensions and operational disruptions affecting traditional air corridors, the Maldives’ ability to offer a reliable, secluded, and opulent escape is proving irresistible to the global elite.
